PhD Position in Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine

University of Bern

Switzerland

Ph.D. student position in overexpression, biochemistry, and functional and structural characterization (cryo-electron microscopy and/or X-ray crystallography) of membrane proteins

A Ph.D. student position is available in the laboratory of Prof. Dimitrios Fotiadis at the University of Bern, Switzerland. The Fotiadis laboratory is working on the elucidation of the molecular working mechanisms of different membrane proteins by structure determination and functional characterization.

We are searching for a highly motivated, independent and committed candidate who is willing to tackle challenges in the field of membrane protein research. Candidates should have a Master of Science (M. Sc.) degree in molecular biology, biochemistry or similar disciplines.

Practical expertise in biochemical characterization of proteins (e.g., SDS-PAGE, gel filtration, etc.) is required, while experience in overexpression of recombinant proteins in bacteria and/or yeast is of advantage. The mission of the candidate will be to produce milligram amounts of functional recombinant pro- and/or eukaryotic membrane proteins for structure determination by cryo-electron microscopy and/or X-ray crystallography. The candidate's project will also include functional characterization using whole cells and/or purified protein reconstituted into liposomes. Expertise in these disciplines and membrane protein biochemistry (e.g., solubilization and purification) is of advantage.

To apply, please send CV, publication list, letter of motivation (one page max.) and 1-2 references to Prof. Dimitrios Fotiadis (see contact address below). Qualified female candidates are especially encouraged to apply.

Ph.D. salary is paid according to the guidelines of the Swiss National Science Foundation.

Entrance: Upon mutual agreement

Duration: 4 years
