The Molecular Imaging Center Antwerp (MICA) of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of Antwerp is seeking to fill the following full-time vacancy

Doctoral student in the area of Biomedical Engineering in Molecular Imaging

The Molecular Imaging Center Antwerp (MICA) is a dynamic team focusing on preclinical, multimodal imaging research in various disciplines of medicine and engineering. In particular, MICA works on translational research from molecule over small animal to first-in-man, as well as in development of methods to perform awake small animal brain scans. The imaging techniques used are Positron Emission Tomography (PET), Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) and Computed Tomography (CT). Our group also has access to high resolution MRI-scanners.

Job description

  • You will work in the area of positron emission tomography (PET) image processing, specifically in the development of tomographic image reconstruction and motion correction methods, as well as in the evaluation of the methods using simulations, phantom and in vivo experiments.
  • You will design and participate in the implementation of experiments to test and validate the proposed methods in PET scans of small animals and humans.
  • You will present your findings at internal meetings, international conferences and scientific journals;
  • You will prepare a Doctoral thesis in the field of biomedical engineering at the faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.


  • You hold a master degree in biomedical engineering, medical physics or you have a similar educational background.
  • You are eligible to apply for a PhD fellowship of the Research Foundation – Flanders (
  • You have a special interest in medical image processing and programming.
  • You have some experience in scientific algorithms programming, using languages such as Matlab, C++, Python or similar.
  • You can work independently and efficiently, you are pragmatic, creative and deadline-resistant.
  • You are fluent in written and spoken English and you have excellent communicative skills.
  • You are a strong team player with the ability to succeed in a dynamic international environment.
  • Excellent academic results are a plus.
