PhD Position in Chemistry and Biology

Carl Von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg Institute for Chemistry and Biology of the Marine Environment

Germany

The Institute for Chemistry and Biology of the Marine Environment (ICBM) at the University of Oldenburg invites applications for a

PhD student position (m/f/d)

Complex systems theory of dissolved organic matter:

modeling the complex interaction between bacteria and organic molecules in the ocean

salary according to E13 TV-L, 75%

starting immediately for a period of 3 years

Application deadline: 15 March 2021

The ICBM is an interdisciplinary research institute, for fundamental and applied marine research. The internationally renowned institute aims at understanding the function of marine environmental systems through close cooperation of the various scientific disciplines (chemistry, biology, physics, mathematical modelling) of its more than 20 research groups.

The position is part of a collaborative project funded by the Lower Saxony Ministry for Science and Culture in the framework of the program “Digitalization in the Natural Sciences”. The project is entitled “Global Carbon Cycling and Complex Molecular Patterns in Aquatic Systems: Integrated Analyses Powered by Semantic Data Management”. In this project marine geochemists and mathematical modelers at ICBM work together with data scientists at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization (Göttingen).

Your tasks: This project, at the borderline between theoretical ecology, mathematical modeling, and marine geochemistry, aims to identify the mechanisms controlling the molecular structure and spatio-temporal dynamics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the ocean. The successful applicant will model the complex network of interactions between highly diverse microbial communities and organic molecules. Upscaling model results to a global scale will allow to predict chemical and ecological turnover rates in a changing ocean.

Requirements: Qualifying academic university degree (Master or Diploma (not of a University of Applied Sciences)) in Natural Sciences with a strong background in applied mathematics, physics, theoretical geochemistry or related areas. Experience in the field of theoretical ecology or mathematical modelling is advantages and respective candidates are particularly encouraged to apply. Applicants must be fluent in written and spoken English and have ability for and willingness to work in a multidisciplinary, international team and to communicate with external partners.

The University of Oldenburg is dedicated to increasing the percentage of female employees in the field of science. Therefore, female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply. In accordance with Lower Saxony regulations (§ 21 Section 3 NHG) female candidates with equal qualifications will be preferentially considered. Applicants with disabilities will be given preference in case of equal qualification.

Applications, including a cover letter, curriculum vitae, qualifying documents (final academic records) and the names and contact information of up to three references should be submitted by email in a singlePDF to Susanne Wendeling ( ) using subject "Digitalization-Modelling" by 15.03.2021.

Interested candidates are encouraged to contact Prof. Dr. Bernd Blasius ( ) for more information about the position.
