PhD Position in Ecological Remote Sensing

60 %

The Remote Sensing Laboratories (RSL) host several research groups working on a variety of topics related to land surface processes, including the use of SAR, LIDAR and imaging spectroscopy based approaches. For more information, see Department of Geography RS

Your responsibilities

In the frame of a larger SNSF-project (2 PhDs and 1 PostDoc) the research group Spatial Genetics at the Remote Sensing Laboratories of the University of Z├╝rich invites applicants for a PhD position in ecological remote sensing. The project aims to understand and quantify the influence of forest structure and canopy ecophysiology on the vertical distribution of species richness and the trophic relationships between producers and consumers in forests. The project consists of two thematically interlinked PhDs in the subject areas forest biodiversity and ecological remote sensing. The position will use state-of-the art close range remote sensing technologies (ie. laser scanning and UAVs) to derive a set of morphological traits and to establish proxies of ecosystem functions, such as biomass and light availability.

Your profile

Upon start, applicants must have a completed master's degree in remote sensing, environmental sciences, geoecology or any related science field, preferably with a certain degree of specialization in close range remote sensing and/or ecology. Applicants must be able to pursue data-oriented computational research (information extraction from large datasets) as well as experimental approaches and fieldwork in a demanding environment. Literacy in programming languages and tools such as Python, R and Matlab is a requirement. You have a driver's license, speak preferably German and can express yourself well orally and in written English. The position will start as of September 1, 2022 or upon agreement and is limited to 3+1 years. Salaries correspond to the UZH regulations of PhD salaries.
