PhD Student Position: Identification of novel drug targets in American trypanosomiasis using chemoproteomics and metabolomics

We offer a PhD project at the Institute of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine (Prof. Jürg Gertsch, for a highly motivated and talented young researcher with strong interest in parasitology, biochemistry and small molecules. Making use of the highly antichagasic natural products identified in a comprehensive parasite infection screening (Salm et al., 2021, iScience, 24(4), p. 102310), we use chemical biology (natural product-derived clickable probes) to identify the underlying targets of the most antichagasic natural products, as well as metabolomics and state-of-the-art Crispr-Cas9 knockout technologies on T. cruzi established in the lab. Chagas disease, also known as American trypanosomiasis, is a potentially life-threatening illness caused by the protozoan parasite T. cruzi and mainly affects the indigenous population in Latin America. Currently, there are no suitable drugs to treat the chronic stage of the disease and new approaches for drug discovery are urgently needed. The PhD candidate will work with T. cruzi infection assays and study the biochemical changes associated wot drug action using proteomics and chemoproteomics. It is expected that new drug targets can be identified by studying the mode of action of antichagasic natural products. The candidate will enter the University of Bern GCB graduate school for a PhD degree (life sciences, biochemistry or molecular biology). A solid background in molecular biology, biochemistry and analytics is desirable. A high motivation, curiosity and a scientific mindset are prerequisites for this position.
