PhD Position in Medicine

Ref PAR 2023/948

The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

At the Department of Rheumatology and Inflammation Research, at the Institute of Medicine, the main research areas are inflammation and inflammatory diseases irrespective of whether they are caused by allergies, infections or are autoimmune diseases. The aim is to investigate the underpinning mechanisms behind the inflammation. Several of our researchers also work as senior consultants at the clinics at Sahlgrenska University Hospital, which is a great advantage especially for translational research.

Within the department, Maglio's group researches the interplay between metabolism and the development of rheumatic diseases with a specific focus on rheumatoid arthritis and systemic sclerosis.

Subject area

Metabolism, inflammation and rheumatology

Subject area description

By combining epidemiologic and –omics data from large patients’ cohorts and in vitro studies in primary human cells, our group aims to understand the interplay between metabolism and inflammation in the development of systemic sclerosis, a rare and complex rheumatic disease affecting the immune system, the microvascular system, and the connective tissue in different organs.

As a co-worker, you will be involved in the work of an international research team in the field of metabolism and inflammation and will work in collaboration with clinicians, molecular biologists, and other research groups. You will be expected to plan, design, and perform research activities aiming to identify metabolites associated with the development and progression of systemic sclerosis. You will work in projects involving interpretation of results from -omics and RNA-sequencing data as well from in vitro cell studies.

The eligibility criteria for employing teaching staff are set out in Chapter 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and in the Appointment Procedure for Teaching Posts at the University of Gothenburg.

To qualify as a postdoctoral researcher the applicant should hold a PhD in a relevant subject. Since postdoctoral constitutes a qualifying appointment for junior researchers, we aim to target those who have a doctoral degree not older than 3 years.

Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability. Personal characteristics as independence, team working skills, and flexibility will be especially valued.

To be a successful candidate you are required to have a PhD in a relevant field, such as molecular biology, biochemistry, bioinformatics and a strong research background in cellular metabolism or inflammation. You shall have published your results as first author in internationally renowned journals. You shall have excellent communication skills in English (both written and oral).

It is meritorious if you have previous experience in interpretation and analysis of metabolomics, proteomics and/or RNA-sequencing data and/or work experience in statistics / biostatistics / data science. Previous experience in the field of auto-immune/rheumatic diseases or wet-lab experience such as flow cytometry are meritorious. Communication skills in Swedish are a merit (both written and oral).
