PhD position: Mitochondrial Biogenesis in Parasitic Protozoa

Applications are invited for a Ph. D. Student position, funded by the Swiss National Foundation at the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Bern/Switzerland.

We are a highly motivated research group that studies mitochondrial biogenesis using the parasitic protozoan Trypanosoma brucei as a model.
The main focus of our work is on mitochondrial protein import, mitochondrial DNA inheritance, mitochondrial ribosomes and mitochondrial quality control.
Previous work has shown that these processes are very different in trypanosomes when compared to the standard model systems of yeast and mammals.
It is our aim to understand the molecular mechanisms of these processes and their significance for the evolutionary history of eukaryotes in general.

Requirements

The student has to have a background in Molecular and Cell biology and/or in Biochemistry. Moreover he/she has to fulfill the requirements - and will be part - of the Graduate School for Cellular and Biomedical Sciences of the University of Bern
(www.gcb.unibe.ch). Knowledge in German is desired but not required.

We offer

Integration in an international research group with highly motivated and engaged team members.

Please send your motivation letter, CV, a summary of your master thesis and the names of two referees by email to Prof. André Schneider (andre.schneider@dcb.unibe.ch).
