PhD Position in Mucosal Immunology

University of Bern Department for Biomedical Research

PhD student position in mucosal immunology (3 years)

We are seeking applications for PhD candidates to join the research group of Prof. Reiner Wiest within the division of gastroenterology (Head Prof. Andrew Macpherson) at the Department of BioMedical Research, University of Bern. Our laboratory group publishes influential studies in high-impact scientific journals worldwide.

Our research aims are to investigate the intestinal gut-vascular- and epithelial barrier with focus on its modulation by the sympathetic nervous system and portal hypertension. We study in detail endothelial cell function, connectivity, particle uptake and gene-expression profile as well as mucosa-associated factors (mucus, microbiota, antimicrobial peptides, physical parameters). In addition, in-vivo models and bio-assay plus real-time dual-band confocal laserendomicroscopy complement the experimental approach. This will be applied to various animal models of portal hypertension/liver cirrhosis as well as splanchnic sympathetic hyperactivity and/or splanchnic sympathectomy.

We are seeking young motivated scientists that would like to obtain a PhD degree in biological sciences. Applicants should have a strong interest in molecular techniques, animal research and microbiology and present with excellent team spirit, communication skills and resilience. The position is equipped with a competitive salary according to Swiss-National-Fund-Scale.
