About the Position

The Department of Philosophy in the Faculty of Arts at TMU (formerly Ryerson University) invites applications for a tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of Ethics. Areas of competence are open.

Candidates who self-identify as belonging to an under-represented group in philosophy are particularly encouraged to apply. Normally, candidates must hold a doctoral degree in philosophy by the appointment date. Candidates who are all-but-dissertation (ABD) and near completion by the appointment date may also be considered.

The successful candidate will engage in:

  • Teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels, including graduate supervision. Standard teaching load: two courses in Fall semester, two courses in Winter semester.

  • Scholarly research or creative activity, pursuing a strong, innovative research program.

  • Service duties while maintaining an inclusive, equitable, and collegial work environment.

  • Participation in academic life within the Department and the broader university community.


Required Qualifications

Candidates must present evidence of:

  • Excellence in research (relative to career stage), including publications, conference presentations, participation in public discourse, awards, and scholarly contributions.

  • Potential for teaching excellence, including supervision of graduate students. Evidence may include a teaching dossier with a statement of teaching philosophy, sample syllabi, teaching evaluations, and other relevant achievements.

  • Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in service, teaching, and scholarly activities, including making learning accessible to a diverse student population.

  • Ability and willingness to contribute to departmental and university service through collegial engagement.

Candidates are encouraged to provide information about career interruptions or non-traditional career paths as relevant.


Compensation

This position falls under the jurisdiction of the Toronto Metropolitan Faculty Association (TFA). The minimum salary for the Assistant Professor rank is $103,916.30 per annum, commensurate with qualifications.
