The Group “Physiology of Plant Cell Organelles”, Institute of Biology, at the Humboldt-University Berlin is seeking for a candidate (m-f-d) to fill a

PhD position

at the earliest time point possible. The salary will be of pay grade 13 TV-L (65%).

Within the DFG funded “TRR175: the green hub – central coordinator of plant acclimation” the group of Jun-Prof. Dr. A. Richter elucidates the function of retrograde communication pathways between chloroplasts and the nucleus to understand their function during acclimation to changing growth parameters. With the project “Regulation of Flavonoid Biosynthesis by Plastid-derived Signals”, the PhD candidate will analyse known and previously unknown factors regulating flavonoid biosynthesis in higher plants (i.e., the model Arabidopsis thaliana). The project focusses on the transcriptional and metabolic adjustments permitting the acclimation to changes in the environment.

Your tasks

  • Physiological and biochemical experiments to analyse the regulation of flavonoid biosynthesis through plastid-derived factors with a special focus on photosynthesis and sugar metabolism
  • Characterisation of newly isolated mutants and the function of the to be identified factors during acclimation (DNA-Sequencing, knock out and overexpression, RNAi, CRISPR/Cas, localisation studies, biochemical analysis)
  • Transcriptome and metabolome analysis of plants challenged with high light and cold stress
  • Tasks for the scientific qualification (doctorate)

Your profile

  • excellent M.Sc. degree in Biology or Biochemistry or related fields
  • strong interest in plant biology and acclimation response
  • profound knowledge of basic techniques of molecular biology (DNA, RNA and protein)
  • first experience with statistic programs and/or analysis of next-generation sequencing data (DNA/RNA) is an advantage
  • high level of self-motivation and organisation
  • good communication skills in written and spoken English
