PhD Student position in Plant Biology

The group of Prof. Cyril Zipfel studies sensing and signaling mediated by plant receptor kinases, and their use to engineer better crops

See Nature Reviews Immunology (2016) 16:537; Annual Review of Plant Biology (2017) 55:257; Science (2017) 355:287; Nature (2018) 561:248; Nature (2019) 572:270 for recent references relevant to the project.

Responsibilities

The project, which is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation and is part of consortium with Swiss and Belgian groups, aims at studying the role played by plant immune receptors in the control of food-borne diseases. The project will involve work in both the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana and the crop lettuce, and will employ a combination of state-of-the-art molecular genetics (including CRISPR-guided mutagenesis), physiological and biochemical approaches.

Qualification

The candidate must hold a Master's degree in biology (or equivalent). The successful candidate will be creative, ambitious and highly motivated. Fascination about sensing/signaling processes, host-pathogen interactions, and/or biotechnology is a requirement. Previous experience in plant biology and/or microbiology is an advantage, but is not strictly required.

Excellent English written and oral skills.

We offer

We offer a 4-year PhD position in an inspiring and international environment with access to cutting-edge resources and numerous excellent international collaborations.
