The newly established Division of Crop Plant Genetics at the Department of Crop Sciences of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and the Center for integrated Breeding Research invites applications for the position of a

PhD Position in Plant Molecular Genetics (all genders welcome)

The position is remunerated on the TV-L salary scale EG 13 (50 %) for three years.

Research in the Crop Plant Genetics group is focused on molecular genetics and epigenetic mechanisms in plant sexual and asexual reproduction as well as biotic and abiotic environmental interactions.

Hybrid vigor or heterosis is exploited by hybrid breeding to increase yield and yield stability. The main focus of the position offered is on the characterization of epigenetic dynamics in sexual reproduction and hybridization and its role in heterosis using maize as a model. The isolation of reproductive cells and early embryos by micromanipulation will be instrumental to generate cell-type and developmental stage specific RNA expression and epigenetic profiles by Next-Generation-Sequencing technology.

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD student who hold a master’s degree in biology, biotechnology, agricultural sciences or a comparable subject involving plant molecular genetics. Individuals with experience in transcriptomics of coding and non-coding RNAs and/or epigenetic profiling in plants are strongly encouraged to apply. Experience in NGS data generation and bioinformatics as well as programming skills would be of advantage.

The successful candidate should be able to independently solve scientific problems and to work in a team and collaborate with other research groups. We offer a stimulating interdisciplinary environment with active collaborations and exchange with national and international partners within and outside academia.

The University of Göttingen is an equal opportunities employer and places particular emphasis on fostering career opportunities for women. Qualified women are therefore strongly encouraged to apply in fields in which they are underrepresented. The mission of the University is to employ a greater number of severely disabled persons. Applications from severely disabled persons with equivalent qualifications will be given preference.
