Uppsala University Department of Information Technology

Sweden

PhD Student in Ultrasound Imaging and Image Reconstruction

Published: 2021-02-18

Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our ultimate goal is to conduct education and research of the highest quality and relevance to make a long-term difference in society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has over 45,000 students, more than 7,000 employees and a turnover of around SEK 7 billion.

The Department of Information Technology (it.uu.se) has approximately 280 employees and conducts research and education in a spectrum of areas within Computer Science and Information Technology.  The research is organized into five divisions, where a major arm of research at the Division of Visual Information and Interaction focuses on computerized image analysis.

Within an interdisciplinary research project between the fields of medicine, engineering, and computer science, the open PhD position is at the Computer-assisted Applications in Medicine (CAiM) research group led by Orcun Göksel. Being a part of the Uppsala MedTech Science and Innovation Centre, CAiM is within the Division of Visual Information and Interaction at the Department of Information Technology.

MedTech Science and Innovation Centre (medtech.uu.se) performs and coordinates research in Uppsala in the field of medical technology, and it is a collaboration between Uppsala University and the University Hospital (Akademiska). The centre is a node in the Swedish Strategic Innovation Programme Medtech4Health, and it is collocated with the Department of Medical Technology and Physics at the Uppsala University Hospital.  Such proximity to and colocation with the clinic provides the CAiM group and the PhD student to be hired with a unique setting and opportunity, where not only the research problems are motivated with direct clinical need and problems, but also any scientific and technical developments are rapidly and easily translated into actual medical applications. This ensures both relevance and immediate impact of the conducted research for healthcare and quality of life.

Duties/Project description: The tasks will involve devising, developing, and testing signal and image processing methods for image reconstruction in ultrasound imaging.  Ultrasound is a safe, portable, low-cost, and real-time medical imaging modality, widely used for many clinical applications. Conventional ultrasound imaging generates grayscale maps of reflected echo magnitude, which is not quantitative and does not provide contrast for certain clinical tasks. Nevertheless, ultrasound data is a rich source of information, a successful utilization of which can revolutionize many medical applications. The PhD student will be involved in the development of novel ultrasound imaging and image analysis techniques, with potential focus topics on imaging sequences, numerical methods, and deep learning. The student is expected to collaborate with project partners, and other PhD and MSc students.

Requirements: The candidate must have (at the time of the start of the project) a Master of Science degree in engineering, physics, computer science, mathematics, or related areas relevant to the PhD project topic. Good communication skills in written and spoken English are a must. Knowledge of Swedish language is not required.

Additional qualifications: Enthusiasm for cutting-edge research, team spirit, and capability for independent problem-solving are sought qualities. Good academical standing, theoretical and practical skills and experience, as well as programming knowhow are desired. Experience and interest in signal processing, image analysis / computer vision, deep learning, probability theory, numerical optimization, or (medical) physics is a merit. Given the interdisciplinary and applied nature of this position, understanding of and interest in the biomedical and healthcare domain and collaboration with clinical partners is an advantage.

Application: The application must include a CV, transcripts, and a short motivation letter describing your research interests and relevant skills. If applicable, you may also include a copy of a recent thesis / project report, and max 2 co-authored publications (by describing your own contributions in the motivation letter), and any other relevant documents. Please state your earliest possible starting date and provide the contact information for at least one reference.
