PhD Positions in Biomedical Sciences

100% / 01.01.2024 / 4 years

The Tissue Engineering Group at the Department of Biomedicine of the University Hospital Basel & University of Basel in Switzerland is currently seeking for a highly motivated and ambitious PhD candidate to work on the development of biomimetic bone marrow tissues to investigate human pathophysiological hematopoiesis.

Your position

In the context of a program funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, the PhD candidate is expected to carry out a project at the interface between hematopoiesis and tissue engineering. The project aims at exploiting engineered organotypic 3D human bone marrow tissues (i) as in vitro models to understand and pharmacologically target leukemic cell chemoresistance, and (ii) as grafts to enhance in vivo the recovery of healthy hematopoiesis. For this project, the PhD candidate will work with patient-derived primary cells and perform in vivo and in vitro experiments taking advantage of multiple techniques including (but not limited) to flow cytometry, confocal imaging, OMICs and imaging mass cytometry.

Your profile

  • A Master degree in Biomedical/Life Sciences or equivalent
  • Experience in cell culture techniques (mandatory)
  • Experience in routine cellular/molecular biology techniques (DNA/RNA/Protein extraction, Q-PCR, flow cytometry, microscopy/imaging) (desirable)
  • Familiarity with in vivo (mouse) methods, and stem cell research and/or tissue engineering (as a plus)
  • Excellent communication, writing and presentation skills
  • Outstanding motivation and capacity to work in interdisciplinary teams

We offer you

The interdisciplinary Tissue Engineering Group in Basel, directed by Prof. Ivan Martin, generally aims at understanding mechanisms governing tissue regeneration and to translate this knowledge into innovative clinical approaches. In this environment, we offer you to take part on an exciting and collaborative project. The Department of Biomedicine offers an excellent research environment with world-class research facilities, ideal for building a scientific career. The city of Basel, located on the borders of both France and Germany, is one of leading pharmaceutical and biotechnological centers in the world.
