Two PhD Positions in Translational Cardiology

We are seeking two motivated PhD candidates for our experimental SNF-funded research project "Mechano-electrical interactions and their impact on arrhythmia formation in 'electrical' long-QT and short-QT syndrome". With this project, we aim to gain important mechanistic insights into causal links between electro-mechanical and mechano-electrical interactions and arrhythmia formation in inherited 'electrical' arrhythmia disorders LQTS and SQTS - with the ultimate goal to develop novel mechanisms-based therapeutic approaches.

The PhD candidate should have a masters degree in biology, biomedical studies, biotechnology or medicine (or related fields).

The PhD candidate will perform and analyze different electrical and imaging experiments in vivo, and whole heart and cellular electrophysiological and optical imaging experiments on animal tissue and cardiomyocytes ex vivo.

The ideal candidate:
  • has a strong interest in cardiac electrophysiology and its clinical translation
  • has keen interest and experience in experimental animal models
  • is in the possession of an animal welfare certificate
  • possesses at least basic knowledge in electrophysiological methods, optical techniques and molecular methods
The applicant should submit a CV (including contacts of two referees) and a one-page motivation letter, highlighting her/his experiences in the above-mentioned points and indicating his/her motivation to join the project.

Please send your application electronically to: katja.odening@unibe.ch

The position is offered for a period of three to four years. Salary scale is provided by the Swiss National Science Foundation.
