The Opportunity:

This PhD scholarship is funded as an important part of an Australian Research Council funded project, ‘Fields of Green: Sport as a Communications Platform for Environmental Issues and Sustainability’. The project is conducted by Professor Brett Hutchins, Professor Libby Lester and Professor Toby Miller.

The successful applicant will join the research team and contribute to the overall project, which investigates the range of environmental messages communicated through sports media, and how these messages reflect and negotiate the dilemma of promoting environmental awareness through popular events and activities that inevitably generate their own significant ecological footprints. The successful applicant will join the research team and contribute to the wider project by undertaking their own distinct PhD project.

The details of the PhD project are open to negotiation, but the candidate will undertake a comprehensive analysis of the communication of environmental and sustainability issues in Australian and/or global sports media, including mega-events and major competitions. Preferred case studies include Formula One motor racing and the Australian Grand Prix, or the FIFA World Cup (men’s and women’s, including preparations for the Australian/New Zealand 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup). The case study will be used to explore topics such as sport and event histories, industry insider and athlete perspectives, league and tournament communications, environmental campaigns and activism, sustainability claims and policies, social licences for the hosting of events, carbon reduction and neutrality programs, stadium and venue operations, sponsorship and advertising, and news coverage.

Undertaking this PhD as part of a larger project has several advantages. First, the successful candidate will be integrated into an already successful research agenda that has been funded by the Australian Research Council, and will have access to funding to support fieldwork, transcription, travel, and conference attendance. Second, the candidate will benefit from supervision by research leaders in Communications and Media Studies who possess expertise across a range of areas, including sports media, environmental media and communications, digital and mobile media, and news and journalism studies. Finally, the candidate will benefit from being part of outcomes from the research, which may include co-authored publications (where the candidate’s contributions will be recognised through co-authorship), funded symposia, school-engagement exercises, and future grant applications.
