PhD Student in Mathematics

University of Bern

Switzerland

University of Bern and University Hospital Bern, Department of Diabetes, Endocrinology, Nutritional Medicine and Metabolism (UDEM)
Start of employment: by agreement, employment is fixed-term for one year, renewable for three years

PrecisionLab, led by Prof. Jose Garcia-Tirado, aims to develop new technology for managing diabetes and metabolic disorders through novel digital interventions such as advanced decision-support tools, automated insulin delivery, and the development of mathematical models for precision medicine (digital twins) to foster the next generation of precision therapeutics.

Job purpose
A PhD position is available in the Technology-Enabled Precision Medicine for Metabolic Disorders (PrecisionLab) group led by Prof. Jose Garcia-Tirado and co-supervised by Prof. Lia Bally (Metabolic Physiology Lab) at the Department of Diabetes, Endocrinology, Nutritional Medicine, and Metabolism (UDEM), University Hospital Bern and University of Bern. We seek an enthusiastic candidate who will contribute to digital twin technologies to simulate/predict physiologic variables and generate actionable advice to promote cardiometabolic health in women across the life course. This approach will help understand the potential impact of lifestyle changes, treatments, or medications on a given person through simulation and consideration of female-specific needs. For women, this can mean finding proactive measures to assess how different lifestyle and therapeutic interventions might reduce the risk of CVD in women, in particular during vulnerable lifetime periods such as after pregnancy complications and menopause.

The position also implies the student's engagement in interdisciplinary activities related to interactions with the target population and technology deployment in clinical studies.
