The position will be associated with the research activities conducted in Carl-Johan Wallentin's research group, where a general focus is on the development of new catalytic methods to generate molecular complexity and activate typical inert functionalities. More specifically, we focus on the use of catalytic processes that is mediated by visible-light. The project is a collaboration between research groups at the University of Gothenburg and Uppsala University, which means that candidate will have access to world-leading experts and relevant equipment at both universities. The postgraduate service will thus include method development in the field of photoredox catalysis, where interactions across scientific disciplines and between several research groups at two universeties enable research on the absolute forefront in the subject area.

Job assignments

The project will mostly involve synthesis and method development, which means that most of the doctoral time will centered on laboratory work. It is therefore important that the candidate have experience of organic synthetic laboratory work.

The work during the doctoral period shall result in a written and defended doctoral dissertation that is in accordance with the rules for a dissertation at the University of Gothenburg (https://medarbetarportalen.gu.se/digitalAssets/1694/1694635_doktorandregler--180701.pdf).

In addition to the scientific work, a doctoral student must participate in:

  • Group activities such as group meetings, literature presentations, etc.
  • Departemental work assignements includes, teaching, maintenance of instruments and administration.
  • Graduate courses equivalent to 60 credits must be registered to obtain the degree of doctor.
  • Present research results at scientific conferences.
  • In addition, a licentiate essay or mid-term seminar must be presented within two years of commencement of the PhD-student appointment.

Eligibility

To be eligible for third-cycle studies, the applicant must meet both the general and specific entry requirements: A person meets the general entry requirements for third-cycle courses and study programs if he or she:

  1. has been awarded a second-cycle qualification,
  2. has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle, or
  3. has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

To meet the specific entry requirements for third-cycle studies, applicants must: (i) have a second-cycle (advanced-level) degree in a relevant* subject area in the natural sciences, or (ii) have completed studies for at least 60 higher education credits at a second-cycle level in relevant subject areas in the natural sciences, or (iii) have completed a corresponding program of relevance to the planned third-cycle program, in Sweden or in another country, or have equivalent qualifications.

The specific entry requirements also include an acceptable command of spoken and written English. Guidelines for assessing English proficiency may include a minimum score of 550 on the TOEFL test (or 213 on the TOEFL-CBT, or 79 on the TOEFL-iBT).

Assessment

In selecting between applicants who meet the general and specific entry requirements, their ability to benefit from third-cycle studies shall be taken into account. The assessment shall attach particular importance to documented qualifications for:

  • Experimental work
  • Research background
  • Level of English, both orally and in written form.

Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for education on a doctoral level are given in SFS 1993:100.

A new employment as a PhD student applies for a maximum of one year. The Appointment may be prolonged for up to two years at a time. The total employment period may not be longer than the equivalent of four years of full time doctoral studies.

University applies local agreement on salaries of graduate students.
