Project description: PhD position in Clinical Psychology and Behavioral Medicine.

Uppsala University, Department of Psychology, Division of Clinical Psychology

The overall focus of Lance McCracken´s research team is to develop broadly cognitive behavioral treatments particularly applied within physical health. This work incorporates principles of Contextual Behavioral Science, the psychological flexibility model, and is mostly applied clinical research. The PhD student will be involved in all stages of research from conceptualization and pilot testing of new assessment and treatment delivery methods through to preliminary testing of efficacy and mechanisms of change. Current directions in the research team include the development of “process-based therapy” and ideographic approaches to studying intraindividual behavioral processes and developing new treatments. Populations of interest are likely to include people with chronic pain conditions. More specific populations may include fibromyalgia, headache, vulvodynia, or neuropathic pain. Research within the group has included the use of therapist supported online treatments as a vehicle for testing treatment components. There is a strong interest in using these treatments as a tool to investigate ways to customize treatments, to optimize both efficiency and clinical outcomes. Right now the team is exploring the application of single case experimental designs as an alternative to randomized controlled trials. These will be used to investigate efficacy, mechanism of change, and moderation, and as the appropriate base to accommodate a truly dynamic process-based approach to treatment. Thus, the successful applicant should have an interest in contextual behavioral science, treatment development, and physical health, particularly chronic pain conditions. The PhD student will be involved in different clinical projects. Prior experience in broadly cognitive behavioral treatment delivery, in physical health settings, and in multidisciplinary teams will be beneficial. The direction of initial studies will be led by the PhD supervisors, and subsequent projects will require substantial direction from the PhD student who will formulate their own research questions and design their own projects within the general focus of the research group.
