PhD Student Position in Chemical Biology of Riboswitches

University of Zurich

Switzerland

The following project will be conducted at the laboratory of Prof. Dr. Roland K.O. Sigel at the Department of Chemistry, University of Zurich, and will be supervised by himself and Dr. Sofia Gallo.

Your Responsibilities

Research of the Sigel group focuses on RNA dynamics and structure, specifically looking at the role of metal ions and/or metal complexes during RNA folding. The molecules under investigation include large ribozymes, G-quadruplexes and riboswitches. For the study of these RNAs, our group employs and develops a wide range of methods that include chemical biology, structural biology (NMR and crystallography), single molecule fluorescent spectroscopy (smFRET) and Molecular Dynamics. The project focuses on the study of riboswitches by chemical biology tools, although the field can be extended in any other direction of the above-mentioned techniques.

Please find further information on the group and its research on the group's website.

Your Profile

We are looking for a highly motivated new member of our group. Candidates must have received (or be soon expecting) a Master's degree in chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology or Life Sciences. Experience in RNA handling is an asset but not required.

What We Offer

You will work in a highly interdisciplinary team of chemists, biochemists, biologists, physicists and bioinformaticians and profit from high standard infrastructure as well as excellent working conditions. Your salary and employment are according to regulations of the University of Zurich and the Swiss National Science Foundation.
