Information About the Project

The PhD position will be placed at the Department of Physics, in the Division of Condensed Matter Physics. The research at the division is directed towards a fundamental molecular level understanding of structure and dynamics of different disordered materials in relation to macroscopic function. The division has different activities towards large scale facility research. The research group focuses on the development of advanced X-ray imaging and scattering techniques and their application towards materials with hierarchical structure.

We are looking for a PhD student to work on a project aiming for the extension of the recently developed method small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) tensor tomography to include wide-angle scattering and thereby reach Ångström-resolution. This will extend the strength of tensor tomography to bridge over several length scale, in particular suitable for hierarchical materials, both of natural materials like bone or multi-scale composite materials. This project will in addition drive developments of the analysis of the full structural information contained in the small- to wide-angle scattering patterns or full 3D reciprocal space maps as obtained by SAXS/WAXS tensor tomography.

The project is within an interdisciplinary collaboration and includes the production and preparation of materials in the lab, characterization using a SAXS laboratory source device, combined with electron microscopy, polarized light microscopy and mechanical tests. The project also includes to travel for beamtimes to synchrotrons in order to perform scanning SAXS experiments. One important aspect of the project includes method development of SAXS tensor tomography and will require to improve and write analysis software.

Major Responsibilities
You will be a part of the Division of Condensed Matter Physics at the Department of Physics. The major part of your time will be devoted to your research project, where you will be expected to plan and perform experiments as well as utilize methods for data analysis. You will work in a cross-disciplinary environment and have freedom to form your own research program within the scope of the project. You will also be required to complete a course program (60 higher education credits) and participate in teaching activities and other duties at the Department of Physics (up to 20% of your time). Supervision of BSc and MSc students can also be a part of the work.

Position Summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.

Qualifications
The applicant is required to have a Master of Science degree in materials science, physics, chemistry or similar. We are looking for a highly motivated candidate that has interest in both experimental work in the laboratory, but also in extended data analysis and method development including writing of software tools (Matlab or Python). 
The candidate is expected to have good presentation skills and appropriate knowledge of English, written and spoken. Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
