Post Doc in Acoustic Simulations of Ultrasound Integrated Microfluidic Reactors

This work will be carried out in the Group of Transport Phenomena and Multiphase Systems at KU Leuven under the supervision of Prof. Simon Kuhn. We also form part of the larger Process Engineering for Sustainable Systems (ProcESS) group at the Department of Chemical Engineering with expertise in process intensification, use of alternative energy sources and membrane technology.

Responsibilities

Despite the many advantages of microchemical systems, their widespread industrial application is significantly limited by their currently achieved throughput and productivity. In this project we will overcome these throughput limitations by exploiting the synergistic effect of ultrasound irradiation.
Specifically, a mathematical model will be developed which will provide a fundamental understanding of the underlying ultrasound physics and their interplay with reactor geometry, material and fluid properties. This model will then be used to predict the sound field in ultrasound integrated microfluidic reactors, with the goal to enable the formation of a standing acoustic waves and acoustic resonance. Furthermore, it will be applied to predict acoustic streaming and to quantify its effect on mixing inside the microchannels. After establishing the model and validating the predictions, these microfluidic reactors will then be manufactured and applied to chemical reactions.
We are looking for a highly motivated post-doctoral researcher with a strong background in modeling of acoustofluidic systems. The successful candidate will be offered a post-doc position to become part of our international team with global research and industry links. Funding can be initially provided for a period of 1 year, with the option of extension to 2 years.

Profile

  • Requirement: PhD in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or Mathematics
  • Knowledge of CFD and reaction engineering will be regarded as a plus
  • Adequate English (written and verbal communication) for scientific interactions required
  • Strong motivation is a must
  • Willingness to work at interdisciplinary boundaries
