Recruitment Period

Position description

Postdoctoral positions are available with Professor Erik Gartzke in the Center for Peace and Security Studies (cPASS) in the Political Science Department at the University of California, San Diego.

cPASS conducts rigorous, data-driven research on international affairs and U.S. foreign policy. Its mission is to apply cutting-edge social science to improve our collective understanding of how humans can best cooperate in an increasingly globalized and connected world with rapidly advancing technologies. At cPASS, we are devoted to applying innovative thinking and diverse methodologies (experiments, deductive modeling, statistical analysis, case studies, archival research, and “big data”) to traditional security issues made more dynamic and difficult by the increased complexity of interstate competition and conflict. We emphasize a team-based, multi-method approach to research that combines qualitative and quantitative perspectives. cPASS is committed to promoting research excellence and diversity within cPASS and our academic field.

Postdocs will spend part of their time working with Professor Gartzke and cPASS researchers in conducting research activities such as data collection, analysis, preparing project reports and manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals, preparing and delivering oral presentations to diverse audiences, overseeing qualitative research, or supervising project labs, and mentoring graduate and undergraduate research activities.

A Ph.D. in Political Science, International Relations, Social Science, or a related field is required at the time of appointment. Applicants with appropriate skills are encouraged from a wide range of disciplines related to international relations. The appointment may be delayed for applicants expected to complete their Ph.D. within the next six months.

Candidates must have a strong working knowledge of international relations theory and research methodology.

Ideal candidates will have the knowledge and skills to work on cPASS’s existing streams of research or will demonstrate the ability to develop and resource a new stream in line with cPASS’s mission and values. Current cPASS research projects include:

  • Global Security and Economic Interdependence in the 21st Century
  • Forecasting Crisis Dynamics with Machine Coded Data
  • Cyber Escalation in Power Projection
  • Named Entities for Social Science: Datasets Creation through Knowledge Graphs
  • Bayesian Latent Variable Modeling of Covid-19 Cases

A complete listing of recent research is at https://cpass.ucsd.edu/research/index.html. Candidates with demonstrated leadership or commitment to support diversity, equity, and inclusion in an academic setting are preferred.

Applicants must apply for this position at this link: https://apol-recruit.ucsd.edu/JPF02659.

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or status as a protected veteran.

This position will be 12 months from the date of appointment. Renewal may be possible. Some flexibility exists as to the starting date of the post with summer 2021 as the earliest. Positions will be remote; residence in San Diego may be desired as pandemic conditions improve.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
