The Department of Family, Youth and Community Sciences at the University of Florida/Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) is seeking applications from those interested in a post-doctoral associate position.

The grant-funded position is available at the Center for Sustainable and Organic Food Systems and the Global Lab on Economic and Behavioral Research under the supervision of Drs. Mickie Swisher and Jorge Ruiz-Menjivar. The post-doctoral associate will conduct research with key players (i.e., farmers, distributors, and consumers) in the value chain of emerging crops in the U.S., such as specialty pumpkin (e.g., tropical pumpkin or calabaza). Job description: The postdoc will be responsible for coordinating and conducting social science research activities with crop farmers, food distributors, and consumers in Florida. Research activities include interviews with farmers, focus groups with distributors, and the development and administration of online questionnaires with consumers. Additionally, the postdoc will engage in dissemination activities, including scholarly reports, peer-reviewed journal publications, and academic conference presentations.

Expectations: This position is a 12-month, non-tenure track, grant-funded position with an initial appointment of 1 year that can be renewed for an additional year. This position is a time-limited position, and continuation of this appointment is contingent upon the availability of funding, Center and lab needs, and satisfactory performance in the position.

Qualifications

All applicants must hold a minimum of a doctoral degree with research experience in social and behavioral dimensions of sustainable food and agricultural systems. Candidates must have relevant research experience associated with actors in the food and agricultural value chains (e.g., farmers, cooperatives, distributors, retailers, and consumers).

Preferred applicants will have demonstrated skills in implementing research, training, or technical assistance projects and the ability to produce verbal and written communication appropriate for a range of audiences, including scholarly reports and publications. Candidates should have demonstrated interpersonal skills that foster teamwork and collaboration, the ability to work effectively individually and as part of a large interdisciplinary team, and the ability to coordinate multiple academic projects.

Candidates should have (i) experience managing research data sets; (ii) knowledge of a range of research methodologies, and in particular surveys, interviews, focus groups, and mixed-methods, advanced data analysis skills; (iii) advanced data analysis skills—particularly, multivariate analysis (i.e., regression, structural equation modeling, network analysis), and qualitative analysis techniques; and (iv) competencies with advanced statistical and data analysis software (e.g., SAS, STATA, R package, NVivo) are desirable.
