Postdoc in Geology

Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management, Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen is offering a Postdoc scholarship in Geology commencing 1st of April 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Description of the scientific environment

The Section of Geology is part of the Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management and is located on Øster Voldgade 10 in the central part of Copenhagen. The successful applicant will be working daily in the Research Group of Geochemical, Mineralogical and Petrological Earth Science, which includes analytical facilities such as EMPA, ICP-MS, LA-ICP-MS, and several TIMS instruments.

Project description

The research project investigates Archaean rocks from the Nuuk-Maniitsoq region of SW Greenland using geochemical methods at the University of Copenhagen. The research will study the petrology and geochemistry of peridotite, norite and diorite, with the aim of determining their geodynamic formation setting with implications for modelling the craton formation mechanism in the region with an emphasis on SCLM stabilization. Therefore, it is an advantage to have worked on ultramafic rocks previously.

Prior analytical skills and experience with handling instruments such as EMPA and/or LA-ICP-MS is a requirement. Expertise in the analysis and interpretation of PGEs and Re-Os isotope data is considered an asset. Experience with thermodynamic modelling software like MELTS, PERPLEX or similar is also important. Previous outdoor and camping experience under remote arctic conditions is essential for safety reasons, and thus previous field experience from Greenland or the Arctic is an advantage for the successful applicant.

The postdoc’s duties will include research within Geology, Petrology and Geochemistry, as well as some teaching. The position may also include performance of other duties for the Department.
