Position Details

Recruitment/Posting Title -Post Doctoral Associate

Department -SAS - Chem & Chemical Biology

Salary -Commensurate With Experience

Posting Summary

The Castner group at Rutgers seeks to hire one or two postdoctoral researchers for research projects focusing on experiments to understand the interplay between structure, dynamics and transport in novel ionic liquid systems. These NSF-funded research projects will include collaborations with the theory and computational chemistry group of Prof. Claudio Margulis at the Univ. of Iowa or/and on the multi-institution Project Earth project (Profs. Mark Shiflett, Univ. of Kansas- PI, and the Castner group at Rutgers, Maginn group at Notre Dame, and Pentzer group at Texas A&M universities).

The research will involve studies of liquid structure using synchrotron X-ray or neutron scattering; combined studies of liquid structure and dynamics using quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS) or neutron spin echo (NSE) methods; and understanding transport in liquids by measuring diffusivities via pulse gradient spin echo NMR experiments.

Posting Number -20FA0975

Minimum Education and Experience

The candidate must have a Ph.D. in physical chemistry, chemical physics, or a closely related field (e.g., condensed matter physics, materials science). The ideal candidate will have received their Ph.D. within the past three years.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Experience in X-ray or neutron scattering at national laboratory facilities or/and NMR experiments for measuring molecular diffusivities or distance correlations. Expertise in liquid state of soft matter chemical physics and physical chemistry methods in general is an major requirement. While prior experience with ionic liquids, molten salts or deep eutectic solvent systems is highly valued, this is not required. Experience with the methods listed above must be demonstrated by recent publications or/and presentations.

The successful candidate will be a self-motivated, problem-solving researcher who is interested in combining independent solo projects with leadership of highly collaborative team projects including outstanding Rutgers undergraduate researchers and team members from other institutions. The candidate will be highly motivated to write manuscripts for publication in top ranked journals, as well as giving presentations at regional, national and international conferences.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

The successful candidate must be available able to travel to national laboratory facilities (such as the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Lab in Illinois, the NIST Center for Neutron Research in Maryland) for scheduled research trips for periods from 24 hours to 2 weeks to lead and participate in experiments that are run on a 24-hour schedule. The candidate must be capable of working completely independently on certain projects, and also contribute as a leading team member in research projects that include other members of the Castner group at Rutgers, and our national and international research collaborators.

Special Instructions to Applicants

Applicants should submit the following documents in the form of a single PDF file including the following:

  • Brief cover letter describing research and mentoring experiences to date,
  • curriculum vitae,
  • names and contact information for three references,
  • two writing samples from their own recent work, such as research articles or their Ph.D. thesis. (URL links are encouraged here).
