The Department of Marine Sciences at the University of Gothenburg invites applications for a Post Doctoral Researcher to work on the effects of biodiversity on the responses of experimental seagrass ecosystems to fluctuating environmental drivers and marine climate change.


The Department of Marine Sciences is a multi-disciplinary academic environment including marine biology, marine chemistry, oceanography and marine geology. Our teaching and research activities stretch from oceanic circulation under the polar ice to biogeochemical fluxes in the deep sea, and from shallow temperate seagrass beds to cold-water coral reefs. In these environments we study different levels of biological organization from genes, individuals and populations, to communities and ecosystems. We work with the ecology, evolution, physiology, systematics and combinations of these fields in order to understand the impact of natural and anthropogenic changes of the environment. The Tjärnö Marine Laboratory has a strong research focus on experimental marine ecology, mariculture, and population genetics and molecular biology. Relevant to this announcement, the Laboratory has excellent flow-through seawater systems, mesocosm facilities (with the ability to manipulate seawater temperature, salinity, pH, and light), ready access to the environment, and an excellent population and evolutionary genetics group with associated molecular analysis laboratories.

Project description

We seek a skilled and dedicated Postdoctoral research fellow to advance and develop experimental research into the effects of intras-specific genetic diversity on the resilience of simplified seagrass mesocosms to simulated climate change and environmental fluctuations. This work is funded by FORMAS, the Swedish Research Council for Sustainable Development, and is part of a larger project comprising parallel initiatives in Finland (Åbo) and Norway (Tromsø). Specifically, the project will: i) quantify the effects of intraspecific genetic diversity on the resilience of model seagrass ecosystems to both abiotic and biotic stressors, and; ii) investigate how naturally fluctuating future climates influence that relationship.


Job assignments

The successful applicant will work in close collaboration with senior researchers at the Tjärnö Marine Laboratory as well as other researchers and PI’s within the broader international project. The postdoc will primarily be responsible for refining, developing, and running mesocosm experiments, sampling protocols and programs, data-analysis and writing manuscripts. The work will be based at the Tjärnö Marine Laboratory at the University of Gothenburg outside Strömstad (, but may also include field and/or laboratory work at partner sites in Finland and northern Norway.


Qualifications for academic positions are outlined in Chapter 4, Sections 3 - 4 of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance. Appointment as a Postdoctoral Researcher requires a PhD degree in a relevant subject (e.g. marine biology or marine ecology) or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD in a discipline relevant to the position. Priority will be given to candidates who have completed their degree within three years before the application deadline. Those who have completed their PhD more than three years ago can be considered, if there are special grounds (e.g. leave of absence due to illness, military service, work for trade unions and student organizations, parental leave or other similar circumstances).


Selection Criteria & Assessment

The successful applicant should have extensive knowledge of: experimental design and analysis in coastal marine ecosystems; experimental manipulation of multiple climate drivers (e.g. warming and/or freshening and/or acidification) in marine ecosystems; trends and fluctuations of key climate drivers in coastal seas, and; the effects of those drivers on marine organisms and ecosystems. Candidates with documented experience of manipulating fluctuating environmental drivers, and/or the effects of warming, acidification and/or freshening on seagrass or macroalgae will be prioritized. Experience in genetic analysis of intra-specific variability, and/or seagrass husbandry are meritorious but not essential. Good communication abilities in written and spoken English are required qualifications.



The employment is a fixed term employment for 2 years placed at the Department of marine science at Tjärnö, Strömstad.

Start date: 1 March 2020 or by agreement.
