Dr. Tim Shutt in the Departments of Medical Genetics, Cumming School of Medicine, at the University of Calgary is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow in Mitochondrial Biology.

Job Description:

We are looking for a highly motivated and talented Postdoctoral Fellow to work on an exciting 2-year funded project that will investigate how mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) transfer healthy mitochondria to cells with dysfunctional mitochondria. The candidate will work under the direct supervision of Dr. Tim Shutt. A variety of molecular, biochemical and cellular approaches will be employed and the successful candidate should have expertise in cell culture and microscopy techniques. The project will examine the signals that initiate mitochondrial transfer, and involve a high-throughput screen to identify compounds that regulate mitochondrial transfer.

The candidate will play a leading role in directing the research project, which involves collaboration with other labs, and is expected to communicate effectively. They will join a thriving and interactive research environment set within a newly refurbished open-plan laboratory space. State-of-the-art computational, imaging and molecular biology facilities are available. The candidate will also benefit from a motivational research environment and engage with a broad range of investigators with expertise in developmental biology, model organisms, medical genetics and stem cells.

Postdoctoral position offers a stipend of $45,000 CAD/year for 1 year, with the possibility of renewal depending on performance; plus benefits. Postdoctoral fellow will be expected to apply for major funding opportunities they are eligible for (e.g. NSERC, Killam, AITF, Banting).

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will hold and/or be able to demonstrate:

  • PhD degree obtained within the last 3-years in Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Pharmacology or a related subject area
  • Experience with molecular and cell biology techniques including mammalian tissue culture, making protein extracts, western blotting, immunohistochemical staining, transfection, and confocal/fluorescence microscopy
  • Expertise with high-throughput screening and flow cytometry would be is highly desirable
  • Proven track record in academic research
  • An excellent record of peer-reviewed publications Excellent interpersonal skills, with and an ability to work both in a team environment, as well as independently are a must
  • Strong communication skills in English, both written and spoken
