Post-Doctoral Scientist in Influenza Research

University of Bern Institute of Virology and Immunology

Post-Doctoral Scientist in Influenza Research
Institute of Virology and Immunology (IVI)
Mittelhäusern/Bern, Switzerland

The Institute of Virology and Immunology (IVI) with two sites in Mittelhäusern and Bern offers high quality research, teaching and diagnostic services in veterinary virology and immunology in cooperation with the Vetsuisse Faculty of the University of Bern ( A research focus are viral diseases of livestock but research on zoonotic diseases has become more and more important over the past years.

The research group of Gert Zimmer studies the multiple functions of viral envelope proteins with a focus on influenza and other negative-strand RNA viruses. Our lab has also been involved in the characterization of the recently identified bat influenza A viruses.

We are currently looking for a post-doctoral scientist to work on a SNSF-funded project dealing with the role of the small M2 membrane protein in the life cycle of bat influenza A viruses. The objectives in this project are:
(1) Characterization of the ion channel activity of bat influenza virus M2 proteins (in collaboration with Jean-Sebastien Rougier, IBMM, Bern).
(2) Characterization of recombinant bat influenza A viruses encoding mutant M2 proteins.
(3) Analysis of the interaction of bat influenza virus M2 protein with viral and host factors
Methods: (1) Single-cell patch-clamp electrophysiology; (2) influenza virus reverse genetics; (3) BioID proximity labeling; (4) split Nano luciferase complementation; (5) affinity purification of protein complexes; (6) mass spectrometry; (7) generation of CRISPR/Cas9 KO cell lines.
The successful candidate is expected to hold a PhD degree in virology, molecular cell biology, biochemistry or similar and should be passionate about experimental scientific work. We assume that the candidate is experienced in mammalian cell-culture and standard molecular biology techniques and is used to standard methods in virology. The successful candidate will have excellent oral and writing skills in English and should demonstrate enthusiasm, flexibility and independence.
