Postdoc in Molecular Microbiology

Roskilde University

Denmark

Department of Science and Environment, Roskilde University, invites applications for a position as postdoc in Molecular Microbiology from April 1st 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position concerns studies of Salmonella virulence mechanisms. The position as postdoc is limited to a period of 2 years. The project is funded by a grant from the Novo Nordisk Foundation.

The position is affiliated with the Molecular & Medical Biology (MMB) Group that conducts research in basic and translational science of biomedicine and molecular biology. The MMB Group covers a broad spectrum of biological disciplines and works with bacteria, yeast, insect and mammalian cells. At the department we have state-of-the-art laboratory facilities, including Biosafety level 1 and 2 laboratories, mammalian cell culturing laboratories, confocal microscopes, a fully equipped chemical synthesis laboratory and spectroscopic instruments, including the following: NMR, HPLC, LC-HRMS, Proteomics platform. The research group
The Salmonella research group studies the molecular mechanisms of host-pathogen interactions to identify novel virulence mechanisms and develop these into suitable antimicrobial targets. We are particularly focused on elucidating the molecular mechanisms of the link between pathogen-produced small secondary metabolites and virulence, with a potential for identifying novel pathogen-specific targets for treatment of bacterial infections. We are using the human pathogen Salmonella Typhimurium as a model for both intestinal and systemic infections. We have a cross-disciplinary research environment with close collaborations with other researchers.

Responsibilities and tasks
The Postdoc’s work will include research within bacterial intercellular signaling in Salmonella Typhimurium.

Specifically, the project will investigate the molecular mechanisms of a novel signal essential for virulence in Salmonella. In collaboration with an organic chemist and a structural biologist, the Postdoc will also investigate structure activity relationship of the signaling molecule as well as identify its cognate protein partner. The project is interdisciplinary combining expertise within host-pathogen interactions, molecular biology, and medicinal chemistry. In addition, a certain amount of teaching is also required.

Qualifications
We are looking for a highly motivated, independent and enthusiastic scientist. Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent within molecular microbiology or closely related field.

Qualifications within the following scientific areas are required:

  • Site-directed mutagenesis in bacterial model organisms.
  • Cloning, protein expression, protein purification.
  • Working with human pathogenic bacteria in Biosafety Level 2 laboratories.
  • Molecular studies of host-pathogen interactions.
  • Knowledge of or interest in organic chemistry and protein/chemical structural analysis (NMR, HPLC, MS, Proteomics).

The ideal candidate shall be enterprising and possess good communication skills, be visible and involved in the department’s daily activities, in addition to being willing to engage in disciplinary and interdisciplinary collaboration across the department.

Assessment
In the assessment of the candidates, consideration will be given to:

  • Scientific production and research prospective,
  • The ability to promote and utilize research results,
  • Experience in teaching and education,
  • Ability to contribute to development of the department’s internal and external cooperation,
