Position description

Postdoc in Forest Ecology, Remote Sensing, and Modeling at UCLA

The Ordway lab in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at UCLA is seeking highly motivated postdoctoral researchers to join the Forest Ecosystems & Global Change group. We use remote sensing, field observations, and models to understand patterns and processes of forest ecosystem structure and function and the responses of these systems to land use and climate change. We also emphasize research tropics that engage directly with food security and conservation research and efforts in forested landscapes.

Multiple research topics are available:

  1. Currently, the Ordway lab has funding to support one postdoctoral researcher on tropical forest ecology and remote sensing research. We are particularly interested in researchers with experience working with imaging spectroscopy (hyperspectral) and LiDAR remote sensing data. The initial appointment is for 1 year and can be extended for, at least, an additional 1-2 years given satisfactory progress. The researcher will be a part of an international collaborative team working on a project funded by a new NASA Biodiversity grant.

  2. Applicants interested in pursuing research using the NEON Airborne Observation Platform data (https://www.neonscience.org/data-collection/airborne-remote-sensing), leveraging Smithsonian ForestGEO (https://forestgeo.si.edu/opportunities/grants-program) and other plot network datasets in combination with remote sensing data, and/or integrating remote sensing data with the Ecosystem Demography model (https://github.com/EDmodel) in forest ecosystems are encouraged to apply.

  3. Applicants interested in submitting postdoctoral fellowship applications in the coming year are encouraged to reach out (e.g., NatureNet, NOAA, NSF, Smith, UC President’s).

The lab (https://elsaordway.weebly.com/) is located in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at UCLA (https://www.eeb.ucla.edu/). The position can begin as early as fall 2021, but we are willing to consider applicants that cannot start until winter or spring 2022.

Qualifications:
• Ph.D. (granted or expected soon) in ecology, earth system science, geography, data science, or related field
• Background in programming languages (Python, R, or other equivalents)
• Data science skills including proficiency in geospatial data processing and analysis
• Strong record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publication in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific conferences
• Ability to work as a member of a highly collaborative team in interdisciplinary settings

If you are interested, please apply at https://recruit.apo.ucla.edu/JPF06173 by submitting a brief (1-2 paragraphs) statement of your research interests and background, a CV, and the names of and contact information for 3 potential references. Applications will be evaluated starting April 10th, until positions are filled. Candidates from underrepresented groups are especially encouraged to apply.
