Postdoctoral Appointee in Automated Driving

Argonne National Laboratory Vehicle and Mobility Systems Department

United States

Argonne’s Vehicle and Mobility Systems department (VMS, vms.taps.anl.gov) is seeking a post-doctoral candidate to participate in the development of a software framework for the evaluation of automated driving systems on closed roads and tracks using the “Anything-in-the-loop” (XIL) concept.

XIL experiments combine real systems (e.g., a real vehicle) and virtual ones (e.g., other vehicles, traffic signals) in a closed-loop fashion.

The software framework will enable efficient, robust and repeatable execution of XIL experiments on closed roads and will help in the team’s goals of using driving automation and V2X connectivity for greater energy-efficiency.

The candidate will work on: Framework requirements and system architecture.

Network communication between real agents and virtual world. Integration of simulation tools into the framework.

Integration of hardware components into the framework (in collaboration with hardware team).

Formalization and automation of workflows for the setup of experiments, test execution, monitoring, data collection, data processing, analysis, quality check.

Integration of visualization components for test actors and operators.

The candidate will work with researchers that develop new controls for automated vehicles and imagine experiments to demonstrate them.

The engineer will also closely interact with members of the hardware team who will develop the hardware pieces and manage the safe execution of the experiments.

Position Requirements

PhD Degree in Engineering. Experience in systems engineering in automotive, aerospace, robotics, or related applications.

Experience with software development for embedded systems, robotic systems, or ECUs, including real-time software. Experience with simulation environments.

Experience programming in C/C++, Python or related.

Preferred Qualifications:

Previous experience as a system architect. Matlab/Simulink, including compilation to real-world targets. ROS and communication protocols (TCP, UDP).

Experience with rapid prototyping (e.g dSpace, Speedgoat). Software life-cycle (source control, documentation, deployment).

Experience with automated driving simulation software (e.g. CARLA, VTD, Carmaker) and traffic simulators (VISSIM, AIMSUM, SUMO).

Participation in experimental work, e.g., hardware-in-the-loop, track testing, testing of automated driving systems. Requirements management.
