The Environmental Science Division at Argonne National Laboratory is seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee to focus on the area of Urban Earth Science.
The focus will be on observational meteorology both in-situ and remote.
This Postdoctoral Appointee will work most of their time on the Community Research On Climate and Urban Science (CROCUS) a DOE Urban Integrated Field Laboratory (U-IFL) which will use an integrated approach to understanding the interaction between climate change, the urban environment and environmental justice.
In this role, you can expect to:
Work on the CROCUS Measurement Strategy Team (MST) and be involved in the rollout of a new sensor network and play a key role in several large field campaigns. While a background in earth observations is not a requirement, you must be willing to learn.
The MST are proponents of Open Science and you are expected to contribute to our open science efforts including open-source software, data, hardware, educational materials and publishing in open access journals.
The team codes primarily in Python; if you don’t have Python experience, a willingness and capability to learn is necessary.

The target date is indicative of the earliest start date of the candidate we hire. We are willing to accept candidates who can start as late as October 2023 with a completed PhD.
Position Requirements
Required skills:
PhD in Atmospheric Science or related subject, typically completed within the last 0-3 years
Must be able to start by October 2023, with PhD fully completed Programming skills, preferably in Python
Demonstrated ability to publish in academic journals
Effective verbal and written communication skills
Ability to model Argonne's Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork
Preferred skills:
Skills in scientific communications/presentations to the public Skills in version control, unit testing and social coding (GitHub)
Skills in basic electronics, sensors, and communication protocols
Background in urban meteorology
Skills in AI, remote sensing, radiative transfer, HPC and edge computing
