Postdoctoral Associate in Health Informatics, Bioinformatics, and Big Data

Assistant Professor Victor Zhong (https://www.human.cornell.edu/people/wz365) at Cornell University’s Division of Nutritional Sciences is seeking applications from strong candidates for a Postdoctoral Associate position. This Postdoctoral Associate will lead data management and analysis for the two projects recently funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), with the goal of estimating prevalence and incidence of type 1 and type 2 diabetes in people aged <45 years. These projects will use electronic health record data (including unstructured clinical notes) from multiple US health systems, with a total size of ~10 million patients. The Postdoctoral Associate will also lead and participate in other projects in the Zhong lab that aim to advance our understanding of the etiology, progression, and management of cardiometabolic diseases, using prospective cohort data and omics data. The Postdoctoral Associate will contribute to project development, grant writing, study implementation and management, data analyses and manuscript writing as well as mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students. The postdoctoral associate will be able to take full advantage of training, education, and mentorship opportunities offered through Cornell University. 

Qualifications

  • A PhD/DrPH/ScD/MD or equivalent degree at time of appointment.
  • Strong knowledge in health informatics, bioinformatics, data science, epidemiology, or related areas.
  • Application of diverse methods, including but not limited to machine learning, natural language processing, bioinformatics, and epidemiological methods, to analyzing big data.
  • Experience with cluster computing and statistical software (e.g., R, SAS).
  • Strong work ethic and commitment to becoming an independent scientist.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Appointment

This is a two-year full-time appointment. Award of the second year is contingent upon performance in the first year. The appointment may be renewed for any period up to three years (max: 5 years in total). A competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered. Fringe benefits will be included. The position is based at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York. However, the postdoctoral associate has an option to work at Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago, affiliated with Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, for a temporary period of six months, up to one year.
