Postdoctoral Fellow in Astronomy

Stockholm University

Sweden

Description

The Department of Astronomy at Stockholm University has about 80 employees including some 30 PhD students. The main research areas of the department are Galaxies, Supernovae, Computational Astrophysics, Solar Physics, and Planet- and Star-formation. More information about us, please visit: the Department of Astronomy.

The extragalactic research (of which this position forms a part) is also associated with the Oskar Klein Centre (OKC) for cosmoparticle physics, in collaboration with the Department of Physics at SU and the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), all situated in the same building. On the site is also the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics (NORDITA) which has an astrophysics group.

In all, this provides a creative environment for collaboration and with lots of seminars.

Project Description

The postdoctoral position will be associated to an observational project on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) “The obscured regions of the nearest Lyman continuum leaker: massive stars or accreting black holes?” (program ID 8290), featuring integral field spectroscopy with NIRSPEC and MIRI, and imaging with NIRCam and MIRI of the blue compact galaxy Haro11.

Main Responsibilities

The position involves analysis of JWST imaging and spectroscopic data from the project mentioned above. The work will involve analysis of the nebular, PAH and dust emission, modeling of embedded star clusters and suspected black hole powered sources, to make a full account of the ionization budget and the escape of ionizing photons in this prototypical galaxy.

Qualification Requirements

In order to qualify for a Postdoctoral position, applicants are required to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent relevant degree from another country. The degree must have been completed no later than when the employment decision is made or when the position is starting.

Assessment Criteria

It is considered an advantage if the doctoral degree or an equivalent degree was completed no more than three years prior to the application deadline. Under special circumstances, an older degree may also be an advantage. Special circumstances refer to sick leave, parental leave, elected positions in trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical attachment or service/assignments relevant to the subject area.

In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills. Expertise in working with integral field spectroscopy and photoionization/nebular modelling will be considered an advantage.
