The Norwegian Centre for Reading Education and Research (The Reading Centre) is a part of the Faculty of Arts and Education at the University of Stavanger. The Reading Centre is involved in research, Ph.D. education, teaching and academic supervision at the Faculty. The Reading Centre has a National mandate from the Ministry of Education and Research to contribute to improving the overall quality of reading education in Norway; by supporting both work with language, text and communication in kindergartens and the teaching and learning of reading as a basic skill in all subjects in school. The Reading Centre is the country's leading professional environment in the fields of reading and reading education. The Centre leads and participates in a number of large research and development projects - closely linked to the field of practice, and in collaboration with national and international actors. The Reading Centre has around 70 highly competent and dedicated employees forming an ambitious and creative working community.


Postdoctoral Fellow in Education Science/Reading science-Communication and language development in kindergarten


The University of Stavanger invites applications for a two-year position as Postdoctoral Fellow in Education Science/Reading science. The position is organisationally affiliated to the Faculty of Arts and Education, Norwegian Centre for Reading Education and Research.


The objective of the position is to strengthen research, and to give researchers holding a doctoral degree within relevant academic field(s) the opportunity for further qualification toward full professorship. 


The postdoctoral position will be included as part of the work in the FILIORUM Centre for Research in Early Childhood Education and Care -funded by the Norwegian Research Council (NFR). The centre started up August 2018 and will focus on research related to quality in the diverse kindergarten. FILIORUMs's overall aim is to promote belonging, communication and play for all children.


The centre will contribute with innovative research on quality for diversity, innovation and policy making. FILIORUM will be a national hub for the Early Childhood and Care sector, and dissemination at all levels would be high priority. The FILIORUM project description is available on the 


The postdoctoral position is connected to the topic of communication (Work Package 2) in FILIORUM. The postdoctoral position will be linked to development of tools, ways of working and approaches that can promote communication and language development among children with multilingual background in Early Childhood and Care institutions. The position is further linked to the research program area Reading and writing interfaces, and the theme Language learning and participation in reading activities at home and in the Early Childhood and Care institution. The applicant must submit a description of a research project and a plan for its completion. It must be clear from the application in what way the project will add to the overall project description of FILIORUM. 


The applications will be assessed in relation to its relevance, quality and feasibility of the project. Special emphasis is placed on practice close to research in kindergarten context, therefor the applicant must be mastering Norwegian or another Scandinavian language both orally and written. In addition to an evaluation of their submitted project plan and scientific work, potential candidates will be invited to an interview. 


Qualifications within the areas of creativity, innovation and commercialization of research will be given emphasis in appointments to academic positions at the university. 


The research project will be carried out at the University of Stavanger. It is assumed that the appointee will work full time on the project and that she/he will participate in the scholarly circles at the faculty and university. 


The position salary is set according to the State Salary Code, 17.510, code 1352, kr 500.000-612.000 bto, of NOK per annum. In special cases, higher salaries may be considered. 


The position provides an automatic membership in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, which guarantees favorable retirement benefits.
