Postdoctoral Fellow in Environmental Chemistry Focusing on the Use of Passive Sampling for Risk Assessment of Contaminated Sediments

Ref. No. SU FV-1574-21

at the Department of Environmental Science. Closing date: 28 May 2021.

The Department of Environmental Science is one of the biggest departments at the Faculty of Science. The department is divided into four units with more than 170 researchers, teachers, doctoral students and technical/administrative staff from over 30 countries. Research and teaching focuses on chemical contaminants, atmospheric science, biogeochemistry and (eco)toxicology. As an employee at the Department of Environmental Science you will be part of a dynamic environment with research in leading research areas and a strong international profile.

Project description

The position will be associated with the project MOBILITY funded by the Swedish EPA. The overarching goal of MOBILITY is to generate knowledge that can help improve risk assessment procedures of contaminated sediment, including the release and spread of contaminants.

Current risk assessment procedures for sediment largely depend on the total sediment concentrations of the contaminants, while the mobility and bioavailability are governed by the dissolved fraction (Cfree). Passive sampling methods offer established approaches for quantifying Cfree in natural waters and sediments, yet they are not regularly used in monitoring or for risk assessment purposes.

In MOBILITY, we will evaluate the applicability of passive sampling approaches by linking Cfree to contaminant mobility, bioavailability, and toxicity in resuspension experiments covering typical sediment characteristics. The expected outcome of MOBILITY will support several steps in contaminated sediment risk assessments and specifically provide recommendations for the use of passive samplers.

Main responsibilities

The position involves research, including experimental design and experimental work, chemical analysis of organic micropollutants, interpretation of data and data management, writing, and publishing. The project is interdisciplinary and involves close collaboration with other researchers within the project as well as with stakeholders in the reference group. Therefore, the candidate should have an interest in understanding exposure and effects of chemicals from a broad perspective.

Qualification requirements

Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria

The degree should have been completed no more than three years before the deadline for applications. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances, such as sick leave, parental leave, clinical attachment, elected positions in trade unions, or similar. Applicants with an older degree may be in question, but then with another form of employment.

In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills in a relevant area for the position. The successful postdoc candidate is expected to have a PhD in environmental chemistry or equivalent, with knowledge in chemical analysis and environmental fate of organic contaminants.

Terms of employment

The position involves full-time employment for a maximum of two years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Start date in October or as per agreement.

Stockholm University strives to be a workplace free from discrimination and with equal opportunities for all.
