Management & Organisation at the department for Business administration, which includes Economic Geography, is now hiring Postdoctoral fellow in economic geography, specializing in labour market research. This postdoc position is organized within the research program Swedish labour mobility lab: structural change and mobility frictions on regional labour markets, funded by FORTE.

Specific subject description

Economic geography studies spatial aspects of economic growth and structural change. This postdoc position is organized within the research program Swedish labour mobility lab: structural change and mobility frictions on regional labour markets. The aim of the Swedish labour mobility lab is to combine contemporary datasets and historical insights to map the labour mobility structures into expanding jobs in Sweden to increase our understanding of the ways in which skills, gender norms and geography affect who enters expanding jobs, in which ways, and under which working conditions. Facilitating individuals’ transitions from declining to expanding jobs is a central aspect of a well-working labour market. However, we still have limited knowledge about in which ways people enter jobs that grow on regional labour markets, the main frictions stalling labour mobility, and conditions of work after having entered the growing jobs. The Postdoctoral fellow will conduct research within the program, analyzing which skills that characterize jobs that grow, to what extent skills in growing jobs overlap with those in declining jobs, and which individuals, considering their skill backgrounds, find it easier to enter growing jobs. The research is exclusively quantitative and based on data sources covering job ads, as well as data from Statistics Sweden.

Job assignments

The position consists of research responsibilities. The successful applicant will be expected to take an active role in the design and implementation of the research program and to publish material in collaboration with other members of the program. Up to 20% teachning could be possible.

Eligibility

To be eligible for employment as a postdoctoral fellow, the applicant must have a doctorate, a doctorate in the arts or a foreign degree judged to be the equivalent of a doctoral degree. Applicants who have completed a doctorate in the last three years before the conclusion of the application period should be given primary consideration. A person who has acquired a doctorate earlier may also be given primary consideration where special grounds exist, i.e. sick leave, parental leave, or similar circumstances (Appointments Procedure for Teachers at the University of Gothenburg, Ref nr 2018/1166).

Assessment

Research potential in relation to the described position will be assigned particular weight in the assessment of applicants. The position requires documented knowledge and experience of quantitative research on labour markets or skills. Knowledge in programming, especially in Python, is a merit for this position, as is a disciplinary background in Economic geography. The position also requires strong English skills in both speech and writing. As the successful applicant will be expected to take an active role in the design and implementation of projects and to collaborate with other colleagues, the applicant’s ability to cooperate and overall personal suitability will be given thorough attention.

Appointment

By agreement, as soon as possible. This position is a fixed term employment 100 % for two years, in accordance with university agreement Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor (2008-09-01). The position may be extended if special grounds exist, i.e. sick leave, parental leave, clinical duties, elected positions in trade unions or other similar circumstances (Appointments Procedure for Teachers at the University of Gothenburg, Ref nr 2018/1166). The postdoc position, will be located at the Department of Business Administration, Vasagatan 1 in central Gothenburg.
