Project description
We are looking for a person with a genuine interest in organic contaminants and the Baltic Sea. Organic contaminants originate from various human activities and reach the Baltic Sea via direct emissions to the sea or via transport in air and water. Knowledge about the relative importance of different emission sources and transport routes, and how these influence the chemical load to the entire Baltic Sea or locally in coastal zones is necessary for an efficient reduction of contaminant input. Such knowledge can be acquired for example by combining different types of data using mass balance models.

Main responsibilities
The aim of this project is to quantify and compare sources and transport pathways of organic contaminants that are present in the Baltic Sea. Such synthesis work is necessary in order to identify measures that effectively will reduce the chemical load to the Baltic Sea, gain understanding of processes that govern transport and transformation of chemicals in the environment and how inputs and levels will be influenced by future changes in eutrophication status and climate.

This postdoc work includes finding and compiling information regarding emission sources, constructing emission scenarios for different types of organic contaminants, and using these to calculate distribution and levels in the Baltic Sea using existing modeling tools. The postdoc will also compile and process data on environmental concentrations for model evaluations. Different assumptions regarding for example implementation of emission reduction measures, changes in climate parameters and nutrient loads to the sea will be tested in the model simulations. The calculations will be based on various types of published data e.g. from national monitoring programs and scientific studies. Geographical information systems will be used in combination with mass balance models for these studies of sources and transport routes from land to sea.

The postdoc work also addresses general assessments of current possibilities to evaluate the efficiency of measures suggested e.g. by Helcom or in national programs of measures under EU directives.

Qualification requirements
Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria
The degree should have been completed no more than three years before the deadline for applications. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances, which may involve sick leave, parental leave, clinical attachment, elected positions in trade unions, or similar. The applicant cannot have had a previous employment as postdoc at the Stockholm University for more than one year.

Specific qualifications required to be considered as a candidate for employment include a PhD within the subject area of the position (e.g. environmental chemistry, environmental science). The candidate should have excellent writing and communication skills in English. Skills in data processing tools for example MatLab or R and/or experience in modeling of organic contaminants are merits. We are looking for a person with a genuine interest in:

  • Compiling and analyzing data from various information sources
  • Developing methods for up-scaling of chemical emissions
  • Construction of chemical mass balances for the Baltic Sea region
  • Assessments of interactions between organic contaminants and other environmental stressors (e.g. eutrophication, climate change)
  • Assessments of efficiency of emission reduction measures
  • Communication of results with decision makers
  • Publishing scientific papers and reports.

In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills and personality. 

Terms of employment
The position involves full-time employment for two year with the posibility to prolongation with an additional year.
Start date in May 2020, or as per agreement.
