Postdoctoral Fellow in Marine Geology / Micropaleontology

Stockholm University Department of Geological Sciences

Postdoctoral Fellow in Marine Geology/Micropaleontology

Ref. No. SU FV-4259-20

at the Department of Geological Sciences. Closing date: 10 of December 2020.

The Department of Geological Sciences is one of the larger departments within the Faculty of Science with about 70 employees and 1000 students per year. The department supports a broad range of basic research within marine geology, geochemistry and classical geology.

Project description

Artic marine sediments contain the most direct and continuous archives of sea ice variability across Quaternary glacial cycles. These records are important for deciphering the dynamics of the Arctic cryosphere and establishing tele-connections with the global climate system. However, we struggle to accurately date Quaternary Arctic marine sediments. This is due to the sporadic occurrence and limited diversity of biostratigraphically-useful microfossils needed for globally calibrated biostratigraphic age control. However, recent research has identified regions in the Arctic where calcareous micro- and nannofossils are more abundant and can provide critical biostratigraphic age control to the anchor Quaternary age models, which are key to the understanding of Arctic´s climate history.

The over-reaching aim of this project is to develop the Quaternary calcareous nannofossil stratigraphy of the central Arctic, focusing on the underexplored regions that have improved carbonate preservation. Further aims are to advance paleoceanographic reconstructions of the Arctic across the Quaternary, and to investigate the utility of using ancient DNA to identify regions, and intervals of time, where coccolithophores may have existed, but whose skeletal remains are no longer preserved in sedimentary sequences.

Main responsibilities

The primary task will be to independently document the abundance and taxonomy of calcareous nannofossils in multiple Quaternary marine sediment cores from the Arctic Ocean and integrate the results with other biostratigraphic and geochronologic data. You will be expected to work with the broader research team to compare nannofossil abundances with results from ancient DNA analyses. Other research directions depend on the applicant´s additional experience and interests.

Qualification requirements

Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria

The degree should have been completed no more than three years before the deadline for applications. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances, which may involve sick leave, parental leave, clinical attachment, elected positions in trade unions, or similar.

The selection is based on how well the applicant is assumed to be able to complete the project tasks. Particular emphasis is placed on the applicant´s knowledge and skills within the subject of his/her proposed specialization, capability to express their work orally and in writing, creativity, ability to take initiatives, independence and ability to work with other researchers. The evaluation is based on previous education and experience, quality and ambitions, the personal letter, description of the proposed project direction and potentially interviews. You must be able to work independently and in groups, as well as toward deadlines. You should be fluent in English as the goal of your work is to summarize the results in internetional peer-reviewed research articles. Proven experience in calcareous nannofossil taxonomy and stratigraphy is necessary.

It is a merit if the applicants have additional experience in micropaleontology, paleoceanography, geochronology and/or analyses of ancient DNA in marine sediments.

Terms of employment

The position involves full-time employment for a maximum of two years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Start date as per agreement.
