The Institute of Odontology provides education for dentists, dental hygienists, and dental technicians at undergraduate and graduate levels, conducts research, and offers postgraduate education in odontological science. The department collaborates closely with the Västra Götaland Public Dental Service in clinical education and research.
The Department of Oral Microbiology & Immunology studies microorganisms in the oral cavity, their interactions with the immune system, and immune function in health and oral disease.
Research Focus:
The postdoctoral researcher will investigate how neutrophils and their neutrophil serine proteases (NSPs) counteract destructive inflammation in periodontal disease. Individual differences in NSP activity may explain why certain people develop periodontitis while others maintain only reversible gingivitis.
Conduct in vitro assays with primary human immune cells from blood and tissues of healthy donors and patients with varying periodontal disease.
Employ laboratory methods such as flow cytometry, fluorescence/luminescence assays, immunoblotting, fluorescence microscopy, and ELISA.
Optionally, participate in bioinformatic analyses of proteomic and transcriptomic data from primary human granulocytes.
Plan, execute, and troubleshoot experiments, analyze and interpret results.
Present data orally and in writing, contribute to manuscript preparation, and participate in national and international collaborations and meetings.
Mentor and supervise project, Master’s, and PhD students within the department.
PhD in a relevant subject is required.
Ideal for candidates whose PhD was completed within the last 3 years.
Preferred experience:
In vitro studies using primary human immune cells.
Oral immunology and/or neutrophil biology.
Bioinformatics analyses (beneficial but not essential).
Clinical experience in dentistry is not required but may be valuable.
