Postdoctoral Fellow in Paleoclimatology

Ref. No. SU FV-4295-19

At the Department of Geological Sciences. Closing date: 14 February 2020.

Stockholm University is a leading European university in one of the world´s most dynamic capitals. The University has more than 33 000 students, 1600 doctoral students and 5500 staff members active within natural science and human science.

The Department of Geological Sciences is one of the larger departments within the Faculty of Science with about 70 employees and 1000 students. The department supports a broad range of basic research within marine geology, geochemistry and classical geology.

Project description
This project seeks to reconstruct past changes in storminess on Holocene timescales using coastal dune systems and peatland archives. We aim to build a transect along the western coasts of Ireland, Scotland and the Faroe Islands. The goal of this work is to compile these new sites together with available paleostorm records in the region in order to (i) chart past changes in the North Atlantic storm track and (ii) identify internal and external drivers of storminess.

The project is hosted at Stockholm University but includes key collaborators at Lund University and Umeå University in Sweden as well as the University of Aberdeen in Scotland.

Main responsibilities
The postoctoral fellow will be in charge of organizing and performing fieldwork and will also be expected to carry out a range of analyses including grain size, elemental and spectral analyses. Dating methods are of central importance and both luminescence and 14C tools will be applied. The postdoc will be expected to integrate these multiproxy data and place them in the context of the research question and lead several manuscripts within the project.

Qualification requirements
Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country in geoscience, environmental science or a related field.

Assessment criteria
The degree should have been completed no more than three years before the deadline for applications. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances, which may involve sick leave, parental leave, clinical attachment, elected positions in trade unions, or similar.

We seek a creative and highly motivated person with very good oral and written communication skills in English. You should be able to work both independently and in collaboration with others. In the appointment process, special attention will be given to your publication record (number of articles in peer-reviewed international journals of good quality, lead authorships), experience in organizing and participating in fieldwork, research activity (networks, applications for financing), communication skills (conference presentations, outreach) and faculty recommendations. Applicants are exptected to have demonstrated experience in paleoclimate reconstructions, particularly those that are peat and/or dune based, as well as with inorganic and/or organic geochemistry, age dating and statistical handling of large multiproxy datasets.

Terms of employment
The position involves full-time employment for a maximum of two years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. There may also be an opportunity for an one additional year of employment. Start date 2020-04-20 or as per agreement
