Ref. No. SU FV-2704-23
at the Department of Meteorology. Closing date: 28 August 2023.
At the Department of Meteorology (MISU) at Stockholm University we conduct research and education in an international environment within four main areas: Atmospheric physics, Dynamic meteorology, Physical oceanography and Chemical meteorology. In all these areas there is a strong focus on the climate and on processes important for the climate and its development. The department includes some 65 individuals, of which about 30 are teachers and scientists, 20 PhD students and 15 administrative and technical staff.
The department is part of the Bolin Centre for Climate Research that, together with other departments at the university, covers research of most of the important aspects of the climate system and the Swedish e-Science Research Centre (SeRC), where we together with KTH and other universities develop e-Science tools and infrastructure to promote scientific breakthroughs in climate science.
Project description
The postdoctoral position is connected to the Swedish MATS satellite mission (Mesospheric Airglow/Aerosol Tomography and Spectroscopy). The MATS satellite was launched in November 2022 to investigate atmospheric waves with a focus on the Earth’s mesosphere and lower thermosphere. The remote sensing performed by MATS is based on optical imaging of atmospheric emissions and tomographic/spectroscopic analysis of the resulting data.
Main responsibilities
The position involves research within the project. In close collaboration with other members of the MATS team, the postdoctor will work with analysis of the data set in order to investigate the importance of the waves in different parts of the atmosphere. An element of basic data processing is also expected, since the data is so new.
Qualification requirements
Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances. Special reasons refer to sick leave, parental leave, elected positions in trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances as well as clinical attachment or service/assignments relevant to the subject area.
The doctoral degree must be in physics, meteorology, climate science, or in a related field.
In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills within the project field. This includes e.g. experience with the analysis of global datasets, with optical meaurements techniques, and with atmospheric wave dynamics. Attention will also be given to the on ability to work independently and in cooperation with others, and written and spoken command in English.
Terms of employment
The position involves full-time employment for a minimum of two years and a maximum of three years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Start date as soon as possible or as per agreement.
