The Mission:

Heart disease is a late effect in patients receiving radiation therapy for thoracic cancers. With the advancements in cancer therapy, this has become a growing problem since the reduction in tumor-associated mortality and cancer recurrence expand the life expectancy of the survivors. Inactivation of the transcription factor PPAR alpha plays an important role in the radiation-induced heart disease.

The main goal of the study is to develop innovative strategies to protect vasculature in healthy tissues from radiation-induced damage while at the same time sensitizing tumors to radiation treatment. For this purpose, PPAR alpha agonists will be administered in combination with a high precision radiation treatment using tumor models in mice.

The successful candidate will plan and implement experimental studies in the area of proteomics, with a focus on radiation response in endothelial cells isolated from different organs. She/he will analyze the data using quantitative software tools and pathway analysis and validate them using immunoblotting, ELISA, targeted transcriptomics, and other methods. She/he will perform written and graphical documentation and evaluation of the data for conferences, scientific publications and project reports.

The project will give the successful candidate the opportunity to strengthen her/his skills on state-of-the-art proteomics and developments in the field of radiation biology/therapy. She/he will be involved in the accomplishment and management of the project, as well as with dissemination of the results in publications and at national and international conferences.

Qualifications

• PhD or equivalent level of professional qualification in chemistry, biochemistry or related subjects
• Experience in in-gel and in-solution digestion, agarose/ polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and immunoblotting, and label-free data-independent acquisition proteomics
• Theoretical and practical experience in mass spectrometry, program-assisted mass spectra analysis, and software applications for pathway analysis
• Theoretical and practical knowledge in radiation biology
• High motivation and initiative, flexibility, ability to work in a team, and creative thinking
• Good oral and written skills in English and German

The following qualifications are considered advantageous:
• Experience in international projects
• Previous experience as a junior post-doc
