Postdoctoral fellow in development of education and applied research aimed at agricultural and food industry professionals in Europe

Special Subject Description

Existing training for agricultural and food production is not adapted to future requirements for sustainable food systems. There are also documented difficulties regarding the transfer of current research in the field to professionals. Within the framework of European cooperation in the field of research and education, new frameworks for education and applied research shall be developed. The area is Science and technology studies (STS), where connections between science, technology and society are studied and analyzed, with particular focus on agriculture and the food field.


The duties of a postdoctoral fellow include mainly research. Teaching can be included in the tasks, however, no more than one fifth of the working hours. Within the framework of the employment, it shall be given the opportunity for three weeks of higher education education.

Essentially, the current service will be part of a research project NextFood - educating the next generation of agri food professionals. The research project is carried out in close collaboration with the members of the consortium, which includes HEIs and organizations in both Europe and the rest of the world. The tasks therefore include actively collaborating with these international actors and independently driving both the acquisition of qualitative research data and the analysis and compilation of it. Administrative tasks also occur in the project. The tasks include conducting interviews and field studies with professionals in the agriculture and food field, as well as with persons active in academia and authorities. These will in turn be the basis for the development of:

  1. Framework for future education in the food and agricultural sectors
  2. Peer review system for assessing the societal impact of applied research

The tasks also include:

  • Some teaching at the undergraduate, advanced and postgraduate level.
  • Work on seeking external research funding.
  • Collaboration with business and society.
  • Administration linked to the tasks above.


A person entitled to be employed as a postdoctoral fellow is the person who has obtained a doctoral degree, or a foreign degree which is deemed to correspond to a doctoral degree, within the subject area of the employment and which has been submitted no more than three years before the end of the application period. If there are special reasons, a doctorate may have been submitted earlier.

Other requirements:

  • Very good knowledge of English, in speech and writing.
  • High ability to independently run a research project
  • Documented experience of working with ethnographic methods, including interviews and participatory observation
  • Good knowledge of theories on knowledge development and knowledge transfer, as well as relations between science, technology and society
  • Good knowledge of the influence of cultural aspects on learning situations
  • Good ability to cooperate with both international research institutions and practical professionals
  • Experience in agriculture and / or food production

Assessment Bases

This is a qualification position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in the career and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their scientific merit and potential as a researcher.

Particular importance will be attached to scientific ability in the subject area.

When hiring a postdoctoral fellow, the following shall form the basis for assessment:

  • Good ability to develop and implement good quality research.
  • Educational ability.

Consideration will also be given to good co-operation ability, drive and independence, and how the applicant, through his / her experience and competence, is considered to supplement and strengthen ongoing research within the institution and contribute to its future development.


The employment is limited to a maximum of 2 years and refers to full-time employment. The employment is limited in time according to the agreement, "Contract for fixed-term employment as a postdoctoral fellow", between the social partners dated 4/9/2008 (Employers' employer, OFR's, Saco-S and SEKO).
