Postdoctoral Fellow in the School of Advanced International Studies

Johns Hopkins University

United States

General Description

Founded in 1943 and a Johns Hopkins division since 1950, The Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies of the Johns Hopkins University (SAIS) has been educating global leaders for almost 60 years. As a highly selective graduate institution with a distinguished faculty, SAIS consistently ranks as one of the top schools of international relations in the world. SAIS was founded to provide a practical approach to training students in international leadership and foreign relations, and to provide mid-career educational opportunities for those already working in related fields. Today, SAIS offers the M.A., M.I.P.P., and Ph.D. degrees and enrolls some 700 full-time students on the Washington, DC campus, 190 students at the SAIS Center in Bologna, Italy, and about 180 Chinese and international students at the Hopkins-Nanjing Center in Nanjing, China.

The Postdoctoral Fellowship

The School of Advanced International Studies at the Johns Hopkins University invites applications for a 1-year postdoctoral fellowship (extension possible pending grant renewal) in Washington, DC to support year one of a three-year research project looking at the energy transition in India.

The post-doctoral fellow's research will evaluate the economic feasibility of coal-fired power generation in India, considering the ongoing transition to renewables and the risk of stranded assets. This work will produce a detailed evaluation of the economic fundamentals of India's coal-fired power generation portfolio under realistic and robust assumptions about future scenarios. This assessment will help Indian policymakers plan for an economically viable transition based on a transparent and rigorous analysis.

Specific tasks include:

  • Maintain, update, and improve ISEP's data on India's power system and coal-fired power generation
  • Develop and execute power systems and integrated assessment models to establish baseline energy trends, conduct scenario analysis, and assess implications of different policy interventions
  • Prepare academic research papers and policy briefs based on modeling

The post-doctoral fellow will manage the research conducted on the ground and will build networks and contacts to help disseminate the research under the Energy, Resources, and Environment (ERE) program and the Initiative for Sustainable Energy Policy (ISEP).

There is a possibility that the position could be extended to years two and three of the project, pending grant renewal.
