The Department of Materials and Environmental Chemistry (MMK) is one of the biggest departments at the Faculty of Science with about 160 employees, including about 50 PhD students and about 30 postdoctoral fellows/researchers. The research is focused on the synthesis, processing and characterisation of various types of materials, including self-assembled materials, porous materials, inorganic materials, and bio-based materials, with applications in energy, environment and health. Project description
The purpose of this project is to develop a fundamental understanding of the heat conduction and phonon transport of biobased nanocomposites. Development of thermally insulating materials based on renewable or widely abundant raw materials (see e.g. Wicklein et al, Nature Nanotechnology, 2015) could substantially improve the energy efficiency of buildings and reduce the environmental impact.

The position is financially supported by the Swedish Energy Agency (Energimyndigheten).

Main responsibilities
The postdoctoral fellow is expected to develop assembly and processing routes to produce anisotropic super-insulating nanocomposites and to combine experimental studies and simulations to quantify the phonon transport and heat conduction. The directional contributions to the heat transport should be related to the size, shape and orientation of the bio-based and inorganic components, and the interaction of the nanocomposites with the environment, e.g. through uptake and release of moisture.

Qualification requirements
Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country in a relevant area.

Assessment criteria
The degree should have been completed no more than three years before the deadline for applications. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances, which may involve sick leave, parental leave, clinical attachment, elected positions in trade unions, or similar.

The selection will be based on scientific excellence. A suitable background is  PhD in materials chemistry, materials science or chemical engineering or similar. Extensive experience in preparation and characterisation of bio-based foams and aerogels is required. Experience in small angle X-ray scattering, electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and modelling is a merit. The successful candidate will join a vibrant multidisciplinary team of students and post‐docs and should therefore be a self-motivated researcher and a good team player with experience of large research collaborations. Applicants must have strong communication skills with excellent knowledge in English, both written and spoken.

Terms of employment
The position involves full-time employment for two years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Start date 2020-04-01 or as per agreement.
