General Description

Hanna Pickard, Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of Philosophy and Bioethics, in collaboration with the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics, invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Philosophy and Mental Disorder. The fellowship is an opportunity to pursue an independent research project while working alongside Professor Pickard and, simultaneously, to participate in the Berman Institute's Hecht-Levi Postdoctoral Fellowship in Bioethics. There is no specific requirement of research topic, but the proposed project must have an interdisciplinary orientation and align with Professor Pickard's own interests. These include but are not limited to: addiction, anorexia, personality disorders; questions of self-identity, agency, emotions, mental capacity, and responsibility in mental disorder; irrationality, mental health and social and criminal justice. Applicants must also have an interest in the opportunity afforded by the Berman Institute of Bioethics to connect philosophical and scientific research into mental disorder with issues in health ethics and policy.

As a member of the Hecht-Levi cohort of Bioethics Postdoctoral Fellows at the Berman Institute, the Fellow will have access to Berman Institute faculty and resources, including weekly seminars, presentations, discussions with leading academics and policy makers, professional development training, outreach efforts, and teaching opportunities commensurate with experience and background. In addition, they will have an affiliation with the William H. Miller III Department of Philosophy and the opportunity to be part of the interdisciplinary Foundations of Mind Group at Johns Hopkins and so have access to faculty members, events, and possible collaborations across the Departments of Philosophy, Cognitive Science, and Psychological and Brain Sciences.

Qualifications

Applications are welcome from candidates who will have a Ph.D. by the start date of the fellowship. The Ph.D may be either in philosophy, or in psychology or cognitive science provided the applicant has had past exposure to and an ongoing interest in philosophy which they wish to develop. Applicants should not have held the degree for more than three years by the start date of the appointment.

Terms of Appointment

The fellowship is guaranteed for one year with the expectation of a second year of funding, contingent on review. Applicants may not be employed by another institution and are expected to be in residence for the duration of the appointment.

Salary is $60 000 per year, plus health and other benefits, and there is a modest discretionary fund for travel to relevant conferences and research expenses.

  • During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception.   • The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
