About the Position

A fully funded PhD position is available to study the evolution of symbioses and transitions to multicellularity. The project focuses on interactions between bacteria and green algae and their influence on the evolution of multicellularity.

Research methods will combine:

  • Experimental evolution

  • Comparative genomics

  • Field sampling and ecological studies

The PhD candidate will be part of Charlie Cornwallis’ research group at Lund University and collaborate with Courtney Stairs (Uppsala) and Klas Flärdh (Lund).


Work Duties

  • Conduct independent research in evolutionary ecology.

  • Fieldwork, microscopy, molecular biology, and statistical modeling.

  • Participate in third-cycle courses and departmental duties (up to 20%).

  • Opportunity to develop technical and analytical skills.


Requirements

General Admission Requirements:

  • Master’s degree (MSc) in Ecology, Evolutionary Biology, or related field.

  • Satisfy Swedish third-cycle study requirements (240 credits with at least 60 second-cycle).

  • Good oral and written proficiency in English.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with microbes, microscopy, molecular genetics, bioinformatics, statistical analyses, and handling large datasets.

  • Strong interests in evolution, ecology, and microbial interactions.

  • Independence, collaboration, and drive.

  • Communication skills and relevant professional experience.


Terms of Employment

  • Full-time PhD position (100% FTE) for 4 years of studies.

  • Fixed-term employment of up to 5 years including departmental duties.

  • Salary: Monthly remuneration according to Swedish regulations.
