Department: Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences – University of Helsinki, Finland
Deadline: 15 February 2026 (or until suitable candidates are found)
Start Date: Negotiable
Job Type: Full-time
Job Field: Science and Research
The Mähönen Lab, led by Academy Professor Ari Pekka Mähönen, is seeking Postdoctoral Researchers and PhD Candidates in Plant Developmental Biology.
The lab focuses on vascular cambium—the tissue responsible for producing secondary xylem (wood) and phloem. Research aims to uncover the molecular mechanisms and intercellular dynamics of bidirectional cell production by vascular cambium stem cells using:
Lineage tracing techniques
Molecular genetics
Proteomics
Advanced microscopy
Genomics
Model species include Arabidopsis thaliana, as well as hybrid aspen and silver birch.
Funded projects include Research Council of Finland–funded Academy Professor projects on stem cell fate and a Novo Nordisk Foundation–funded project on wood tissue patterning. Postdoctoral researchers are encouraged to develop independent research lines.
Required Qualifications:
Doctoral researchers: strong background in developmental genetics, plant molecular biology, biochemistry/proteomics, or cell biology
Postdoctoral researchers: similar expertise, with ability to independently develop research projects
Excellent communication skills in English (spoken and written)
Desirable Skills:
Experience in plant developmental biology and cambium research
Experience with Arabidopsis or tree models
Conduct research on stem cell fate decisions and wood tissue patterning
Participate in lab activities and collaborative projects
Develop independent research projects (postdocs)
Contribute to publications, presentations, and scientific dissemination
Contract Duration: Doctoral researchers: up to 4 years; Postdoctoral researchers: 3–5 years (6-month trial period)
Collaborative, innovative, and inclusive work environment
Performance-based salary (according to Finnish university collective agreements)
5–7 weeks annual leave, flexible working hours
Occupational health care, access to high-quality sports facilities, and language classes
